A Century of Art in Latin America: 100 Years of Vision, Identity, and Experimentation.
A sweeping new exhibition at the Denver Art Museum invites visitors to explore the extraordinary depth and diversity of artistic production across an entire region and a full century. A Century of Art in Latin America, now on view in the Fox Gallery within the museum’s Latin American Art galleries, offers a comprehensive survey of works created over the past 100 years, tracing artistic innovation across borders, generations, and mediums.
Featuring iconic historical figures such as Diego Rivera and Roberto Matta, alongside contemporary trailblazers including Alexander Apóstol and Tessa Mars, the exhibition brings together a remarkable range of artistic voices. Paintings, sculptures, textiles, prints, and mixed-media works sit side by side, revealing how artists across Latin America have responded to social change, political upheaval, cultural identity, and the natural world.
Latin America itself defies easy definition. From soaring mountain ranges and scorching deserts to dense forests and luminous coastlines, it encompasses vast geographies and cultures shaped by millennia of distinct histories. The art produced throughout the 20th and into the 21st century reflects this complexity. Rather than presenting a single narrative, A Century of Art in Latin America embraces contradiction, experimentation, and plurality—qualities that have long defined artistic practice across the region.
Unlike earlier exhibitions that focused on specific movements such as Surrealism or Abstraction, this presentation takes a broader, more inclusive approach. By juxtaposing works from different countries, eras, and stylistic traditions, the exhibition highlights both shared concerns and striking differences, offering visitors a richer understanding of how Latin American artists have shaped—and reshaped—modern and contemporary art.
All works on view come from the esteemed John and Sandy Fox Collection, underscoring decades of dedicated collecting and scholarship. The exhibition is organized by the Denver Art Museum.
